Alaskan soprano, Katy Wells is ecstatic to join the St. Charles Singers this season! Ms. Wells recently returned from performing in Europe as a soloist with conductor Edoardo Müller and the American Institute of Musical Studies Festival Orchestra, where her voice was described, "like steel, wrapped in velvet..." In America, she has performed on the operatic stage with Arizona Opera, Southern Arizona Opera, Arizona Opera Theatre, Northridge Opera Theatre, and Anchorage Opera. When she isn’t performing, Katy loves to kayak, bike or just go for a run.
As a concert artist, Ms. Wells has entertained the audiences of Scottsdale Musical Arts, Tucson Symphony, Scottsdale Symphony, and the Anchorage Civic Orchestra with her expressive singing of sacred and oratorio works. While a veteran soloist of Handel's Messiah, Katy is pleased to have recently added St. John Passion (J.S. Bach) and the Misa Criola (Ramírez) to her solo credits in 2011. Some of her other favorite guest appearances have included Rutter's Requiem and her performance of Mozart's 'Exsultate jubilate' with orchestra celebrating her win at the CSUN Concerto Competition in Los Angeles, CA.
In vocal competitions, this delightful diva has been recognized several times including those hosted by the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the University of Arizona, Southern Arizona Opera Guild, and Elgin Opera Company. She is an alumni of Ann Baltz's OperaWorks program, the American Institute of Musical Studies, the Bel Canto Institute, a Philanthropic Education Organization Women's Scholar Award Nominee, and recipient of the CSUN Graduate Fellowship.
Ms. Wells has bachelors and masters degrees in voice performance and will complete a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Arizona in 2013. Katy is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and teaches voice lessons in Schaumburg.
